We’re working to create new jobs and economic development in Wyoming.
At Ramaco Carbon, we partner with national laboratories and universities, and are lead recipient of millions in U.S. Department of Energy-funded research grants. We are creating ways to use the carbon in coal to manufacture advanced products and materials, such as carbon fiber. This work has big financial implications for the state, and has been called Wyoming’s prime job growth opportunity.
After over eight years of working with the state, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality has declared our mine plan near Sheridan meets all technical requirements. The mine will provide feedstock for the researchers and manufacturers at our facilities, and contains extensive environmental and quality of life protections. The comment period for this application is now complete, and the DEQ is expected to reach a decision this summer.
Our iCAM research campus has nearly completed construction, where we look forward to hosting leading researchers in advanced materials and other fields.
Some key points about our project are below. Please take a look around our website for more information, and thank you for your interest!
Economic Benefits
- We have been hiring local workers and firms at good wages for nearly a decade. By creating higher-value uses for coal, we hope to create more lucrative opportunities for people to stay and work in Sheridan.
- Ramaco has already attracted both local and national researchers and organizations to the area, creating a new ecosystem of innovation. As the project develops we will attract more. This is why we refer to Sheridan as our Carbon Valley℠.
- The millions we are receiving in research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy is being spent in Sheridan. This funding and our partnerships help validate the potential to make a reality of what has been started.
Environmental Responsibility
- We have been, and will continue to be, good stewards of the land, air and overall environment, and sensitive to local concerns.
- Our permit has some of the most thorough environmental and quality of life protections for any mining operation in the country, let alone Wyoming.
- Both the DEQ and independent environmental firms have confirmed the mine design addresses all the types of conditions that were subjects of past concern around mines in the area.
Good Neighbors
- We support local businesses, workers, and events, and are dedicated to expanding local economic opportunities.
- Our annual Ramaco Research Rodeo conference in Sheridan brings together distinguished scientists from across the country, from organizations like MIT and the U.S. National Research Laboratories.
- Local input from community leaders and others led to many of the environmental and quality of life protections found in our permit, which include restrictions around when blasting will occur and less traffic during business hours.
